In this role, you’ll support train operations and contribute to the safe, timely movement of trains, gaining experience in locomotive management, rail safety protocols, and train handling. This structured learning path prepares you for an independent career in the rail industry.
Key Responsibilities
- Duty Preparation: Start each shift by preparing the designated locomotive, conducting safety checks, and ensuring operational readiness.
- Locomotive Management: Conduct pre-trip checks, confirm roadworthiness, and assist with connecting and disconnecting vehicles as needed.
- Communication Management: Equip and test communication devices, ensuring all team members can stay connected throughout the journey.
- Train Assistance Enroute: Monitor signals, assist the Train Driver, and respond to any emergencies.
- Shunting Support: Help move and place freight trucks, update vehicle lists, and secure loads per work orders.
- Documentation and Record Keeping: Maintain records and submit documentation for payroll and reporting purposes.
Qualifications and Requirements
- Education: Matric/Grade 12 with Pure Mathematics and/or Physical Science.
- Minimum Age: 21 (per SANS 3000 regulations).
- Physical Fitness: Must meet specific physical, visual, and auditory standards.
- Psychomotor Skills: Assessed through the Vienna Testing System (VTS).
- Height Requirement: Minimum 1.6 meters.
- Medical and Behavioral Assessments: Required for rail safety duties.
Essential Skills and Competencies
- Technical Knowledge: Familiarity with communication systems, locomotive types, and rail equipment.
- Safety Compliance: Knowledge of train working rules, rail yard layouts, and the Health and Safety Act.
