Job Description

The Trainee Train Assistant will support the Train Driver in ensuring the safe handling, movement, and delivery of freight trains. The role involves assisting with pre-trip preparations, coupling and uncoupling of wagons, monitoring the train en route, and ensuring compliance with safety standards.
The trainee will be responsible for contributing to efficient train operations across different train types, including airbrake, vacuum, high-speed, heavy-haul, and passenger trains. This role requires a strong commitment to safety, physical fitness, and the ability to operate in a fast-paced environment.
Key duties include:

  • Signing on duty at the designated workplace and receiving shift assignments
  • Preparing the locomotive by obtaining and placing equipment on board
  • Assisting with starting up locomotives and performing brake tests
  • Verifying communication equipment functionality
  • Conducting pre-trip inspections of locomotives and trains
  • Assisting with coupling and uncoupling activities at various locations
  • Monitoring train operation en route to ensure safe movement and adherence to schedules
  • Providing feedback to the Train Driver regarding track conditions, signals, and other important operational information
  • Completing the Train Journal and submitting it at the end of each shift
  • Assisting with administrative duties and incident reporting as needed

Minimum Requirements:

  • Grade 12 (Matric) with Pure Mathematics and/or Physical Science
  • Be at least 21 years old at the time of application
  • Height requirement: minimum 1.6m tall
  • South African citizenship
  • Preparedness to relocate to Beaufort West for the duration of the training and employment
  • Psychomotor ability (assessed through the Vienna Testing System)
  • Physical fitness including hearing, vision, and mental fitness (to be verified through medical tests)
  • No criminal record
  • Willingness to undergo periodic medical surveillance and safety behavioural risk assessments
  • Ability to carry heavy objects and perform physically demanding tasks

Role Responsibility

The Trainee Train Assistant will:

  • Assist the Train Driver with locomotive preparation and pre-departure inspections
  • Obtain and check communication devices such as radios and telemeters
  • Carry out coupling and uncoupling of wagons when required
  • Support shunting activities at depots and en route, according to work orders
  • Assist with brake tests and ensure proper mounting of train indicators and telemeters
  • Observe signals, patrol locomotives, and monitor the safe running of the train
  • Provide protection during incidents and emergencies
  • Report incidents and irregularities along the route to the Train Driver promptly
  • Execute emergency procedures when required
  • Comply with safety standards, operational protocols, and company policies
  • Complete daily administrative tasks, including maintaining accurate records in the Train Journal
  • Collaborate with other team members and assist in creating a safe and efficient rail transport service

  • Knowledge of communication systems used in rail transport
  • Understanding of depot layout, yard, and siding operations
  • Familiarity with locomotive classes, their capabilities, and constraints
  • Knowledge of train working rules, shunting procedures, and safety protocols
  • Competence in handling locomotive coupling and uncoupling
  • Good observation and spatial awareness
  • Strong reasoning, judgement, and decision-making abilities
  • Effective communication skills, both verbal and written
  • Time management and stress management skills
  • Ability to concentrate and remain alert for extended periods
  • Strong psychomotor skills and coordination
  • Ability to work under pressure and in varying weather conditions
  • Understanding of Health and Safety Act 85, Basic Conditions of Employment Act (BCEA), and SANS 3000 (Human Factors) regulations
  • Problem-solving skills related to locomotive operations
  • Familiarity with the handling and preparation of both electrical and diesel locomotives
  • Willingness to follow instructions and adhere to company policies
