Job Description

The successful candidate will take on responsibilities in line with Anglo American’s strict engineering and safety protocols. Key duties include daily maintenance, fault identification, and emergency repairs of underground machinery—particularly SANDVIK LP and Fermel Mediator equipment. The role is critical to ensuring continuous production and plant availability in a high-risk mining environment.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Attending and conducting safety meetings and risk assessments regularly
  • Allocating daily maintenance and inspection tasks to support staff
  • Responding promptly to machinery breakdowns and operational emergencies
  • Verifying availability of spares, tools, and materials before job execution
  • Ensuring effective on-the-job coaching for subordinates
  • Exercising sound judgment when assessing machinery for part replacement
  • Completing detailed job cards, including records of work done and spare parts used
  • Performing legal examinations and recording findings in standard formats
  • Participating in daily inspections, PMs (planned maintenance), and shutdowns

The Diesel Mechanic will play an essential role in aligning with Anglo American’s goal of maintaining zero harm and maximum asset performance.

Ideal Candidate

The ideal candidate is a certified Diesel Mechanic with at least two years of post-trade experience in an underground, mechanized mining environment. You must have a strong working knowledge of SANDVIK and Fermel equipment and be physically fit to handle challenging underground conditions.

Role Responsibility

Key functional responsibilities include:

  • Safely performing mechanical repairs and maintenance in a mining environment
  • Allocating and coordinating shift-based tasks for subordinate artisans
  • Monitoring equipment performance and identifying early signs of failure
  • Working with engineers and planners to ensure asset longevity
  • Participating in audits, incident investigations, and process reviews
  • Documenting maintenance history and producing accurate job feedback
  • Ensuring compliance with MHSA and company-specific maintenance protocols

Qualifications and Requirements

To qualify for this position, candidates must meet the following minimum requirements:

  • Grade 10 with Trade-Specific N2 OR
  • Grade 12 with Trade-Specific N3 (advantageous)
  • Certified Diesel Mechanic Trade Certificate
  • Any additional trade certification is an added advantage
  • At least 2 years’ post-trade experience in a mechanized underground mining operation
  • Experience on SANDVIK LP and Fermel Mediator equipment
  • Valid Code 08 driver’s license
  • English literacy (read, write, and speak)
  • Familiarity with risk assessment procedures
  • Basic computer literacy (MS Office and maintenance systems)
