The University of Johannesburg (UJ) is seeking a dedicated General Assistant II to join its Grounds and Sports Field team. The role focuses on maintaining gardens, lawns, sports fields, and associated equipment across campus. The successful candidate will assist in pitch preparation (including cricket), landscape upkeep, pest control, irrigation, and ensure all grounds are safe, clean, and well-maintained.
Key Responsibilities
- Mow lawns, prune shrubs, fertilize soil, rake leaves, and water plants
- Prepare cricket pitches and maintain turf and sports fields
- Clean pathways, remove trash, and manage garden aesthetics
- Operate and maintain equipment like lawnmowers, blowers, trimmers, and sprinklers
- Maintain and install irrigation lines and ensure pest control
- Assist in landscape design and installation including cement garden borders
- Perform health and safety duties such as handling tools safely, maintaining hygiene, and wearing PPE
- Provide upkeep for driveways, parking lots, fountains, and green spaces
- Maintain nursery plants and apply insecticides or fertilizers
- Support with setup of sports and recreational events
Minimum Requirements
- Grade 12 (NQF 4)
- At least 3 years of job-related experience, including cricket pitch preparation
- Physically fit with ability to perform manual labor
- Good verbal communication skills
Recommended
- Valid Code 8 Driver’s License
