Anglo American Learnership Measure Control Instrument Mech 2026

Valterra Platinum, formerly known as Anglo American Platinum, is offering an exciting opportunity for young South Africans through the Engineering Learnership Programme (18.2 – Unemployed). This programme provides candidates with the opportunity to gain hands-on technical experience while building a career in the mining and engineering sector.

Valterra Platinum is a leading primary producer of platinum group metals (PGMs) with integrated mining, smelting, and refining operations in South Africa and Zimbabwe. After its demerger from Anglo American plc, the company now operates as an independent organisation with listings on both the Johannesburg Stock Exchange (JSE) and the London Stock Exchange (LSE).

The company remains committed to operational excellence, sustainability, and long-term value creation across the entire platinum group metals value chain. Through this learnership programme, Valterra Platinum aims to develop the next generation of skilled artisans who will contribute to the future of the mining industry.

This opportunity is ideal for individuals who are curious, motivated, and eager to grow within a technical and high-performance environment. The programme combines formal training with workplace exposure, allowing learners to build practical engineering skills.

The closing date for applications is 03 April 2026.

Programme Overview

The Engineering Learnership Programme offers structured training that includes both off-the-job training and workplace training. The programme is designed to equip learners with the technical knowledge and practical skills required to become qualified artisans within the mining industry.

Successful completion of the programme will result in a nationally recognized Artisan qualification, which can open doors to various engineering roles in mining, manufacturing, and industrial sectors.

The opportunity currently available is for the Instrument Mechanician Learnership, which focuses on instrumentation systems used in industrial and mining operations.

Learners will be exposed to modern engineering practices, instrumentation systems, industrial electronics, and process control technologies within Valterra Platinum’s Rustenburg Process operations.

Why this Learnerships or Vacancy Matters

This learnership is important because it provides a direct pathway into the engineering and mining industry. The mining sector remains one of the most significant contributors to the South African economy, particularly in the production of platinum group metals.

Many young South Africans struggle to gain entry into technical careers due to a lack of practical workplace experience. Programmes like this bridge that gap by combining structured education with hands-on technical training.

Participants will gain exposure to real industrial processes, instrumentation systems, and engineering operations used in mining environments. By completing the programme, learners can obtain a recognized artisan qualification, which is highly valued in engineering and technical professions.

This experience not only improves employability but also equips learners with the practical skills required to work in complex industrial environments.

Responsibilities

Although learners will primarily focus on training and development, participants can expect to be involved in activities such as:

  • Learning about instrumentation and control systems used in mining operations
  • Assisting with installation, maintenance, and troubleshooting of industrial instruments
  • Supporting engineering teams in process control and monitoring
  • Developing skills in industrial electronics and measurement systems
  • Participating in workplace safety training and operational procedures
  • Gaining practical exposure to engineering equipment and systems

Learners will also participate in formal training sessions and technical learning modules that support their artisan development.
