We are currently seeking a General Worker to support the Maintenance Team and Directional Drilling Team at Sasol’s Coal Supply, Central Workshop, and Twistdraai Export Plant. This role is ideal for an individual with technical skills in welding, machinery operation, and maintenance assistance who thrives in a team-driven environment.
Job Description
The General Worker will be responsible for supporting maintenance and directional drilling operations, ensuring equipment reliability, adherence to safety protocols, and operational efficiency.
Functional Outputs & Responsibilities:
- Welding & Equipment Maintenance
- Perform welding on mining equipment using flux core and other welding methods
- Safely operate welding equipment and adhere to safety regulations
- Cut materials and preheat components using oxy-fuel gas cutting equipment
- Assist with the operation of overhead cranes and lifting equipment
- Directional Drilling & Machinery Support
- Provide assistance to the Directional Drilling Team
- Support operation and maintenance of underground machinery:
- Shuttle Car
- Roof Bolter
- Crushers
- Feeder/Feeder Breaker
- Safety & Compliance
- Conduct hazard identification and task risk assessments
- Ensure work environment safety standards are maintained
- Follow Mine Health & Safety Act, OSHA, and company safety policies
- Operational Support & Team Collaboration
- Participate in daily morning meetings to discuss work assignments
- Report all task activities and identify any abnormal conditions
- Assist artisans with daily maintenance and repair tasks
- Maintain housekeeping standards in alignment with job-specific SOPs and COPs

Role Responsibilities
As a General Worker, your core responsibilities will include:
Equipment Maintenance & Welding Support
- Perform structural welding and assist with fabrication tasks
- Operate and maintain cutting torches and grinders
- Support directional drilling operations
Health & Safety Compliance
- Conduct risk assessments and hazard identification
- Ensure strict adherence to safety protocols in the work area
- Maintain high housekeeping standards to prevent workplace hazards
Operational Efficiency & Team Collaboration
- Assist the maintenance team with general tasks
- Ensure all work is completed within safety and compliance guidelines
- Actively participate in daily team meetings
Skills and Attributes
To excel in this role, the following skills and attributes are required:
Technical Skills
- 12 months of welding experience
- Ability to safely operate an angle grinder and cutting torch
- Knowledge of underground machinery operation and maintenance
- Understanding of safety procedures, OSHA regulations, and emergency preparedness
Soft Skills
- Strong teamwork and collaboration abilities
- Attention to detail in following safety and job procedures
- Problem-solving skills to handle machinery maintenance tasks
- Time management and task prioritization
Minimum Requirements
To qualify for this position, candidates must meet the following minimum requirements:
Education:
- Grade 12 / N3 / NCV Level 4 or Equivalent
- Mathematics & Science (Advantageous)
Experience:
- 12 months of welding experience (Essential)
- 12 months of plant experience (Preferred)
- Experience in MIG welding (Preferred)
Certifications & Licenses:
- Driver’s License (Code 08 minimum)
- Medical Certificate of Fitness (Must be obtained)
- First Aid Certificate (Preferred)
