Job Description
The primary purpose of the Cashier role is to facilitate smooth transactions at the point of sale, ensuring accurate billing and excellent customer service. This role demands a high level of attention to detail, efficiency, and a friendly demeanor to create a positive shopping experience for every customer.
Key Responsibilities:
- Operate Front-End Equipment, including:
- Point of Sale (POS) Terminal
- Debit Card Terminal
- Speedpoint
- Veri-cheque
- Smartbox
- Zip Zap
- Process Various Forms of Tender Payments, including:
- Cash Transactions
- Cheques
- Gift Vouchers
- Bank Cards
- Pensioners’ Cards
- Stock Handling and Cash Reconciliation
- Accurately count cash at the start and end of each shift
- Handle cash with care to minimize discrepancies
- Ensure the correct scanning of items to prevent pricing errors
- Monitor change availability and request replenishment when needed
- Hygiene, Safety, and Housekeeping
- Maintain a clean and organized cashier station
- Follow all safety and hygiene standards to ensure a pleasant shopping environment
- Adhere to company guidelines for food safety and cleanliness
- Signage and Pricing Accuracy
- Ensure all product pricing is correct and up to date
- Identify and report any pricing discrepancies or stock errors
- Maintain correct shelf labeling and promotional signage
- Customer Service Excellence
- Greet customers warmly and assist with any questions regarding products and promotions
- Provide quick, friendly, and efficient checkout service
- Handle customer complaints professionally and escalate issues where necessary
- Assist customers with loyalty programs, special promotions, and store policies
Minimum Requirements
To be eligible for this position, applicants must meet the following minimum requirements:
- Matric / NQF Level 4 Equivalent (Essential)
- Previous experience as a part-time cashier or trainee cashier (Preferred)
- Good understanding of handling cash transactions and point-of-sale systems
- Basic math skills for calculating totals, change, and discounts
- Strong communication skills to interact effectively with customers and team members
- Attention to detail to ensure accurate transactions and prevent discrepancies
- Ability to stand for extended periods and perform repetitive tasks

Transaction Processing and Cash Handling
- Accurately processing purchases, refunds, and exchanges
- Ensuring correct handling of different payment methods

Stock and Pricing Management
- Ensuring product pricing is correct and up to date
- Scanning items correctly and reporting barcode errors
- Assisting in stock replenishment at the cashier station
Safety, Hygiene, and Store Compliance
- Maintaining a clean cashier station and work area
- Following company safety and security protocols
