Job Description

The Assistant General Underground is responsible for providing safe and efficient support to underground mining operations. This includes assisting with general labour tasks, equipment preparation, environmental maintenance, and supporting mining production teams as required. The role will operate on a rotational shift basis, and all activities must comply with Mine Health and Safety Act (MHSA) regulations and Gold One Group’s safety procedures.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Performing a variety of general underground duties under supervision
  • Assisting with the setup and maintenance of mining equipment and materials
  • Monitoring equipment and surroundings to ensure operational standards are met
  • Reporting any hazards, damaged equipment, or obstructions promptly
  • Maintaining cleanliness of underground workspaces according to housekeeping protocols
  • Adhering to all health, safety, and environmental regulations while underground
  • Participating in daily safety briefings and complying with company policies
  • Supporting shift operations and supervisors in daily tasks
  • Carrying out additional tasks as instructed by mining supervisors or foremen

Role Responsibility

As an Assistant General Underground, your daily responsibilities will include:

  • Following instructions and task briefings from shift supervisors
  • Supporting underground production operations with manual labour tasks
  • Handling tools, materials, and supplies responsibly and as directed
  • Identifying and reporting abnormal equipment or environmental conditions
  • Participating in routine inspections, safety checks, and operational reports
  • Ensuring underground travel routes and work areas remain clear and safe
  • Performing all assigned duties according to training received at the site training centre
  • Complying with underground entry procedures, protective equipment use, and all risk control measures
  • Maintaining good housekeeping and hygiene standards within all working zones
  • Engaging with team members to promote a safe, productive working environment

Minimum Requirements

To be considered for the position, applicants must meet the following qualifying criteria:

  • Grade 11 or equivalent (ABET Level accepted)
  • MQA Competency B Certificate (essential)
  • Medically Fit: Must pass the medical fitness assessment conducted by Gold One’s Occupational Health Centre
  • Language Proficiency: Must be able to communicate in English and at least one of South Africa’s 11 official languages
  • Experience: Prior experience working underground or in mining is advantageous but not mandatory
  • Legal: Clear criminal record and South African citizenship

Applicants without an MQA Competency B Certificate or who fail the medical fitness check will not be considered.
