Job Description
The Multi-Skilled Operator will be responsible for operating a range of heavy-duty earth-moving machinery required in day-to-day open-cast mining activities. The successful candidate must be competent in handling the following equipment:
- Articulated Dump Truck (ADT)
- Dozer
- Grader
- Tractor-Loader-Backhoe (TLB)
- Excavator
Key responsibilities include:
- Operating machinery in accordance with mining safety regulations and procedures
- Conducting pre-start and post-operation checks on equipment
- Reporting equipment faults or maintenance issues promptly
- Maintaining a high level of productivity and equipment efficiency
- Collaborating with site supervisors and fellow operators to optimize mining operations
- Ensuring adherence to environmental and occupational health standards
- Working on rotational shifts, weekends, and public holidays as required

Role Responsibility
The Multi-Skilled Operator will play a crucial role in Canyon Coal’s field operations. The selected candidates will:
- Carry out safe and effective operation of multiple heavy machinery
- Follow site-specific safety and operating protocols
- Ensure that all equipment is handled to avoid unnecessary wear and tear
- Report directly to supervisors regarding operational performance and issues
- Participate in safety toolbox talks and daily operational briefings
- Adhere to production targets while minimizing equipment downtime
Skills and Attributes
Candidates must demonstrate the following:
- Ability to read, write, and communicate clearly in English
- Sound decision-making skills, especially under pressure
- Strong situational awareness and mechanical aptitude
- Consistency in following safety protocols and operational procedures
- Willingness to undergo continued training and skill refreshers
Skills and Qualifications
- Grade 12 / Matric Certificate
- Valid and current competency certificates for ADT, Dozer, Grader, TLB, and Excavator
- Code 10 Driver’s Licence
- Medically fit to work in a mining environment
- Symbol A on the Dover Assessment Test
- No criminal record
- Good written and verbal communication skills
Experience
- Minimum of 3 to 5 years of practical experience operating heavy mining equipment in an open-cast environment
- Proven track record of working in compliance with mining safety protocols
- Experience in a shift-based operation is an added advantage
Other Competencies
- Ability to work independently and as part of a diverse team
- Flexibility to work on rotational shifts, weekends, and holidays
- Sound understanding of basic mechanical functions of mining equipment
- Positive attitude towards continuous improvement and learning
