Introduction
The Department of Correctional Services (DCS) is offering an exciting career opportunity for 2025 with the opening of 36 permanent positions for Security Officers in the agricultural division. These posts are uniquely positioned at the intersection of security and agriculture — a key strategic area supporting the rehabilitation and reintegration of offenders in South Africa. With the growing need to reinforce food security and skills development within the correctional system, these vacancies present a fulfilling path for job seekers passionate about safety, discipline, and agricultural progress.

Agriculture within the DCS serves a dual purpose: to provide food self-sufficiency and to train inmates in valuable farming practices. Security Officers in this domain are instrumental in achieving both, playing an active role in overseeing correctional farms while enforcing prison security protocols. If you’re looking for a career that goes beyond traditional security roles and contributes meaningfully to national development, this opportunity is worth exploring.

Job Description:
The Security Officer: Agriculture post is focused on managing and safeguarding correctional centre farms and production units. These officers supervise inmate participation in agricultural activities such as vegetable farming, fruit cultivation, livestock management, piggery operations, and abattoir work. They operate in diverse environments such as open fields, barns, and storage areas, where maintaining vigilance, enforcing discipline, and ensuring rapid response are key responsibilities.

Successful applicants will be expected to:

  • Implement and monitor agricultural production processes (plant and animal)
  • Adhere to agricultural service standards and departmental policies
  • Ensure security and rehabilitation protocols are enforced
  • Maintain safety across correctional farm facilities
  • Supervise offender participation in structured farming programmes
  • Promote sustainability and self-sufficiency in food production
  • Manage agricultural machinery, equipment, and resources
  • Enforce occupational health and safety standards
  • Contribute to offender rehabilitation through skills transfer and work programmes

Ideal Candidate:
The ideal candidate for this post is a disciplined and committed individual with both security awareness and an appreciation for agricultural systems. This is not a typical guard post — it requires working closely with inmates and agricultural officers in a dynamic farm setting.

You should be someone who values service, structure, and purpose-driven work. A strong sense of responsibility and the ability to remain calm under pressure are essential traits.

Role Responsibility:
The core responsibility of Security Officers in this role includes:

  • Supervising daily operations on correctional farms
  • Protecting and securing farm infrastructure, staff, and inmates
  • Managing logistical coordination of farming equipment and materials
  • Ensuring compliance with the Correctional Services Act and agricultural protocols
  • Supporting reintegration efforts by guiding inmates in agricultural work
  • Reporting security breaches, risks, or incidents related to the farm unit
  • Collaborating with multidisciplinary teams to improve production outputs and rehabilitative outcomes

Skills and Attributes:
The Department of Correctional Services is seeking applicants with the following skills and personal attributes:

  • Knowledge of plant and animal production processes
  • Good written and verbal communication skills
  • Project management and stakeholder coordination
  • Ability to make sound decisions and solve problems
  • Technological proficiency (basic computer literacy)
  • Leadership, people management, and team coordination
  • Honesty, integrity, and confidentiality in all duties
  • A solid grasp of the Correctional Services Act (Act 111 of 1998)
  • Awareness of safety and security best practices
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a broader team
  • Physical fitness and mental resilience for high-demand environments

Minimum Requirements:

To be considered, applicants must meet the following requirements:

  • Grade 12 (Matric) certificate
  • Successful completion of Corrections Science Learnership or Basic Training Programme
  • 8 years of relevant experience for officials who have consistently performed above average at CB 1-2 level
  • 10 years of relevant experience for officials with average performance at CB 1-2
  • Valid driver’s license
  • Proven computer literacy
  • Knowledge of agricultural practices or hands-on experience in a farming environment will be an added advantage
