The Limpopo Department of Health is offering a valuable opportunity for aspiring pharmacists through its 2026 Pharmacist Internship Programme. This internship aims to provide practical training for graduates who have completed their academic qualifications in Pharmacy and are eager to fulfil the South African Pharmacy Council (SAPC) internship requirements.

Successful candidates will be placed across various healthcare facilities in Limpopo Province, where they will gain essential on-the-job experience while contributing to improved healthcare delivery in the public sector.

Job Description:
The internship offers graduates a 12-month structured programme that blends theory and practice in alignment with SAPC regulations. Interns will function under the direct supervision of registered pharmacists and will be responsible for core pharmacy-related activities, including patient care support, inventory control, medicine dispensing, record keeping, and adherence to regulatory standards.

In addition to daily operational exposure, interns may also take part in outreach programmes, mentorship activities, and health education initiatives that reinforce their academic foundation and enhance their professional competency.

Ideal Candidate:
To be eligible for the Pharmacist Internship Programme, candidates must:

  • Hold a Bachelor’s degree in Pharmacy (or be in their final year of study with proof of academic results)
  • Be currently registered with the South African Pharmacy Council (SAPC) as a Pharmacy Student
  • Be a South African citizen with a valid ID
  • Submit a completed and signed Z83 application form
  • Include an updated CV, certified copy of ID, academic transcripts or degree, and proof of SAPC registration

Role Responsibility:
Interns will undertake a variety of responsibilities designed to simulate the duties of a registered pharmacist, including:

  • Working alongside pharmacists in dispensing medication and providing pharmaceutical care
  • Monitoring stock levels, verifying expiry dates, and managing pharmaceutical inventory
  • Performing data entry and maintaining detailed patient records
  • Offering assistance with patient counselling and healthcare advice under supervision
  • Assisting in preparing reports for audits and medicine usage reviews
  • Participating in continuous education and internal training sessions
  • Supporting outreach programmes within local communities

Skills and Attributes:
To thrive in this internship, candidates must demonstrate:

Technical Skills

  • Knowledge of the Pharmacy Act No. 53 of 1974 and Medicines and Related Substances Act No. 101 of 1965
  • Understanding of Good Pharmacy Practice (GPP) standards
  • Ability to use pharmacy-related software and Microsoft Office tools
  • Good record-keeping and stock control techniques
