Introduction

The City of Ekurhuleni is currently seeking experienced, reliable and professional drivers to join its Municipal Bus Service Department. Job Description

The successful candidates will be responsible for operating Council-owned buses on approved routes throughout Ekurhuleni. Duties include transporting passengers safely and punctually, ensuring fare compliance, and performing routine vehicle checks before and after each shift.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Driving buses along designated public transportation routes in accordance with assigned schedules
  • Conducting pre-trip and post-trip inspections to ensure vehicle safety
  • Checking and reporting any mechanical issues or irregularities
  • Monitoring ticketing systems and ensuring passengers pay correct fares
  • Assisting passengers with inquiries related to routes, fares, and schedules
  • Completing trip journals and route logs at the end of each shift
  • Ensuring order and safety within the bus during operations
  • Reporting accidents, route blockages, or unusual events to the appropriate authorities

Ideal Candidate

The ideal candidate is a skilled driver with a deep sense of responsibility, good communication skills, and a strong commitment to passenger safety and public service.

Minimum qualifications and requirements include:

  • Grade 10 or higher (Matric not required, but an advantage)
  • Valid Code C, EC, or EC1(04) driver’s license with a professional driving permit (PrDP)
  • Minimum of 1 year’s proven experience as a bus or heavy-duty truck driver
  • Good interpersonal and communication skills
  • Familiarity with road safety, traffic regulations, and route navigation
  • Ability to remain calm and professional under pressure
  • Physically fit and alert, capable of working variable shifts, weekends, or public holidays

Role Responsibility

As a Municipal Bus Driver, you will be responsible for the safe, courteous, and on-time delivery of transport services. You’ll act as the face of Ekurhuleni’s public transportation system and serve as a direct point of contact for passengers.

Your responsibilities include:

  • Safely operating a municipal bus in various road conditions
  • Performing pre- and post-shift vehicle inspections
  • Ensuring accurate fare collection and maintaining ticket system functionality
  • Providing timely route information and customer service to passengers
  • Maintaining order on the bus and addressing issues calmly and effectively
  • Completing trip logs and incident reports as required
  • Reporting delays, obstructions, and maintenance concerns immediately
  • Upholding the values of professionalism, punctuality, and public courtesy
