Introduction
The City of Johannesburg’s Expanded Public Works Programme (EPWP) is a city-wide initiative aimed at creating temporary job opportunities for unemployed residents while contributing to improved municipal services and infrastructure. For 2025, the EPWP is offering short-term contract positions for Data Capturers and Cleaners across various regions of Johannesburg. These opportunities are designed to address unemployment, provide participants with valuable workplace experience, and empower individuals with skills to enhance their future employability.
Job Description:
The programme is seeking motivated and committed individuals to fill two key roles:
- Data Capturer (Administration – EPWP)
- Provide administrative support to the EPWP Unit
- Capture, verify, and maintain accurate programme data
- Assist with generating reports and maintaining documentation
- Support the coordination of EPWP-related administrative activities
- Cleaner (Opportunity Centre – EPWP)
- Perform general cleaning duties within Opportunity Centres
- Maintain hygienic and safe working environments
- Assist with setting up meeting rooms and serving refreshments during events
- Support operational efficiency within assigned facilities
These positions are targeted at youth, women, and persons with disabilities, ensuring inclusive access to employment opportunities in the City of Johannesburg.
Ideal Candidate:
Successful candidates should demonstrate reliability, a willingness to learn, and the ability to work effectively within a team environment. While experience is advantageous for Data Capturer roles, cleaners can apply without prior work experience.
For Data Capturers, applicants should have strong computer literacy, attention to detail, and the ability to work with spreadsheets and databases.
For Cleaners, physical stamina, time management skills, and a positive work attitude are essential.
Role Responsibility:
- Data Capturer
- Capture and update EPWP data accurately into systems
- Maintain proper filing systems for administrative records
- Support the preparation of programme-related reports
- Assist in the day-to-day administration of EPWP operations
- Cleaner
- Sweep, mop, vacuum, and dust designated areas
- Clean and sanitize meeting rooms, offices, and public areas
- Dispose of waste in a hygienic manner
- Maintain cleanliness standards during events, training, and workshops
Skills and Attributes:

- Excellent attention to detail and accuracy in data entry
- Good organizational and time management skills
- Proficient in MS Office (Word, Excel)
- Ability to work under pressure and meet deadlines

Minimum Requirements:
- Data Capturer
- South African citizen residing in the City of Johannesburg
- Grade 12 / NQF Level 4 or equivalent
- At least 6 months’ experience in administration/data capturing (advantage)
- Knowledge of EPWPRS (advantageous)
- Willingness to undergo computer-based assessment
- Youth (18–35 years) and women will be prioritised
- Persons with disabilities must submit proof of disability
- Cleaner
- South African citizen residing in the City of Johannesburg
- Grade 10 (Grade 12 advantageous)
- No prior work experience required
