Job Description:
The AFGRI Apprenticeship Program is a 3-year in-service training opportunity aimed at equipping learners with both technical skills and practical experience. The program combines formal training at technical institutions with real-world exposure in the workplace, creating a well-rounded foundation for a successful Artisan career.
Key program details:
- Duration: 3 years (including a 6-month probationary period)
- Specializations: Tractor Mechanic or Earthmoving Mechanic
- Training Components:
- Practical training phases at designated institutes
- N-subjects through distance learning (with Saturday classes if necessary)
- Product-specific training at the John Deere Training Facility in Boksburg and other suppliers
- Internal technical training hosted by AFGRI specialists
- Financial Support: All training is covered by AFGRI if passed; failed modules to be repeated at own cost
- Contract Conditions: 3-year contract with a work-back requirement post-qualification
- Scope of Work: Repair, maintenance, diagnostics, and servicing of agricultural and earthmoving equipment
Daily duties may include:
- Performing repairs and maintenance on agricultural machinery
- Diagnosing mechanical faults and implementing solutions
- Managing stock and workshop inventory
- Providing excellent customer service and technical support
- Assisting with general operational tasks in the workshop environment

Role Responsibility:
The apprentice will:
- Learn the fundamentals of tractor and earthmoving equipment servicing
- Assist senior mechanics and technicians in diagnosing and repairing machinery
- Attend all assigned training sessions, both practical and theoretical
- Ensure that all repairs and maintenance work meet industry safety and quality standards
- Maintain accurate records of repairs, parts used, and customer interactions
- Adhere to AFGRI’s policies, values, and operational guidelines

Minimum Requirements:
- Valid Driver’s License
- N2 Subjects (compulsory unless holding equivalent Matric subjects):
- Mathematics
- Engineering Science
- Diesel Trade Theory
- Plus one of the following:
- Industrial Electronics
- Engineering / Technical Drawing
- Motor Trade Theory
- Alternatively, Matric with relevant technical subjects at 40% or higher, including:
- Mathematics or Technical Mathematics
- Physical Science or Technical Science
- Engineering Graphics and Design
- Applicants without the required N2 can complete the qualification through Further Education and Training sponsored by AFGRI as part of the program
