Introduction
The City of Johannesburg (CoJ) is inviting qualifying students residing in Johannesburg to apply for the Intelligent Transport System Internship in the Transport Department, under its 2025 Internship Programme (Circular 016/2025). This internship opportunity is part of the City’s ongoing commitment to provide valuable on-the-job exposure for students needing practical work experience to complete or complement their academic studies.

Successful candidates will be placed within the Scheduled Transport Operations and Control Centre branch of the Transport Department and will play an important role in the operation and support of Johannesburg’s Intelligent Transport Systems (ITS), gaining hands-on experience in managing public transport technologies and data systems.

Job Description
The internship offers an exciting opportunity for students to acquire practical experience within the City’s Scheduled Transport Operations and Control Centre. Interns will support the implementation, monitoring, and management of various transport technologies that keep Johannesburg’s public transport system running efficiently.

The programme is structured to run for up to 18 months, during which participants will receive comprehensive training and mentorship in key ITS functions, working directly with experienced professionals in the public transport sector.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Operate and manage Automated Fare Collection (AFC) system terminals
  • Monitor and assess real-time sales data from vendors and buses
  • Identify, record, and escalate any system inconsistencies or technology malfunctions
  • Generate and prepare daily, weekly, and monthly operational reports
  • Assist the department with revenue and expenditure evaluations and financial assessments
  • Support operational teams in ensuring compliance with system policies and guidelines
  • Gain exposure to data management, financial controls, and stakeholder coordination

Ideal Candidate
This internship is specifically designed for Johannesburg residents who have recently completed or are in the process of completing academic qualifications that align with the technical requirements of the position.

Minimum eligibility requirements include:

  • Completed Grade 12 (NQF Level 4)
  • Completed National Diploma (NQF Level 6) in one of the following fields:
    • Information Technology / Network and Communication (ICT)
    • Advanced Public Transport Management Systems (APTMS)
    • Data Analysis
    • Automated Fare Collection (AFC)
  • Must be a resident within the City of Johannesburg jurisdiction
  • Must not have previously participated in any other CoJ Internship Programme
  • Must be unemployed and available to complete the full internship duration
  • Must be willing to undergo security vetting, screening, and qualification verification

Role Responsibility
