Job Description
Artisan Electricians will perform technical duties within the city’s revenue protection and metering units. This hands-on role involves maintaining electricity meters, auditing for illegal connections, and working with both overhead and underground electricity systems. Tasks include:
- Performing electricity metering operations and inspections
- Auditing large, medium, and low voltage meters for accuracy and tampering
- Identifying and removing unauthorized and illegal power connections
- Installing, disconnecting, and servicing electricity meters
- Joining low- and medium-voltage cables and wiring meter boxes
- Carrying out credit control functions
- Maintaining safety and compliance in line with the Occupational Health and Safety Act (Act 85 of 1993)
- Completing tasks under varying environmental conditions including confined spaces, elevated work, and extreme weather
Ideal Candidate
To be eligible for this role, applicants must have:
- A valid Trade Certificate as an Electrician (Red Seal)
- At least two years of relevant hands-on experience in a local authority or municipal electricity network
- A valid Code C1 driver’s license and valid PrDP
- Physical health and fitness, including ability to work at heights and handle physically demanding tasks
- No criminal record, and willingness to be fingerprinted by the Tshwane Metro Police at own cost
- Readiness to work shifts, be on standby, and work overtime when necessary
The role requires dedication, strong ethics, and a sense of accountability. Experience in municipal energy networks and cable jointing will be a significant advantage.
Role Responsibility
Artisan Electricians will be responsible for:
- Executing electricity audits, disconnections, installations, and meter inspections
- Identifying and documenting electricity theft and illegal connections
- Performing network fault diagnostics and metering fault resolutions
- Carrying out low- and medium-voltage cable work including joining and termination
- Ensuring safety procedures and technical standards are adhered to on site
- Completing administrative records and service reports related to metering, installations, and repairs
- Collaborating with team members, senior technicians, and safety officers to deliver reliable electricity services
