Job Description
The Finance Internship Programme is designed to provide recent graduates with comprehensive exposure to finance operations within the FMCG retail sector. Interns will work directly under the Group Finance Manager and receive guidance from multiple finance professionals, including the Management Accountant and Financial Controller.
Interns will support the finance department across multiple daily tasks, including reconciliations, financial reporting, intercompany transactions, asset register maintenance, and financial analysis. This internship is ideal for graduates looking to apply their academic knowledge in a practical setting and acquire real-world work experience.
Ideal Candidate
The ideal candidate is a recent graduate in finance or accounting who is eager to contribute to a fast-paced finance team, learn industry best practices, and build a solid foundation for a future career in financial management or accounting.
Minimum eligibility requirements include:
- Completed Bachelor of Commerce (BCom) in Accounting or Bachelor of Technology (BTech) in Cost and Management Accounting
- Proficiency in Microsoft Word and Excel (ability to create workbooks and spreadsheets)
- Strong desire and willingness to learn and contribute
- South African citizenship or legal work authorization
- Ability to commit to a 12-month full-time internship based in Phoenix, Durban
Role Responsibility
As a Finance Intern at Star Retailers, you will be actively involved in day-to-day financial operations. Your primary responsibilities include:
- Processing intercompany invoices and ensuring proper recording across the group entities
- Maintaining the Fixed Asset Register under supervision of the Management Accountant
- Performing reconciliations on income, expenses, assets, and liabilities
- Assisting with financial trend analysis and variance reports
- Providing administrative support to the finance team as needed
- Assisting the Accounts Payable Accountant with credit applications and ad hoc administrative tasks
- Offering general assistance to the Financial Controller and Management Accountant on various operational tasks
- Participating in internal audits or compliance processes as assigned
- Supporting the preparation of monthly and year-end financial reports
- Contributing to process improvements to enhance department efficiency
This role is designed to give interns a 360-degree view of retail financial operations while also preparing them for long-term careers in finance.
