Purpose of the Programme

The purpose of the Wildland Firefighter Recruitment is to build a skilled and physically capable fire-fighting team ready to:

  • Respond to wildland fires through prevention, suppression, and mop-up operations.
  • Assist with community fire education programmes.
  • Support environmental safety initiatives such as alien plant clearing.
  • Ensure South Africa is better equipped to handle emergency fire situations with professionalism and readiness.

Key Responsibilities & Outputs

Fire SuppressionPerform direct and indirect fire attacks, mop-up, and post-fire observation duties.
Fire PreventionConduct alien plant clearing, irrigation setup, and public fire education campaigns.
Equipment ManagementOperate, maintain, and inspect tools, fire-fighting equipment, and machinery.
Training & DevelopmentParticipate in mandatory training sessions to maintain high competency levels.
Physical FitnessMaintain required strength and endurance levels to pass assessments.

Minimum Requirements / Eligibility

Applicants must meet the following criteria:

  • Be a South African citizen, aged 18 or older.
  • Available for shift work and standby duties.
  • No criminal record (verification required).
  • Possess a high level of physical fitness and good overall health.
  • Successfully complete the Arduous Pack Test:
    • Distance: 4.8 km
    • Pack weight: 20 kg
    • Time: under 45 minutes
  • Pass a Physical Fitness Assessment and Occupational Health Practitioner Evaluation.
  • Must work effectively under pressure in high-stress environments.
  • Comply with NCC Group’s Alcohol, Drug, and Substance Use Policy.
  • Demonstrate strong teamwork, discipline, and observation skills.
