Job Description
The Laboratory Assistant will work closely with the Inorganic Chemistry team to support various analytical processes. This role includes preparing samples, performing basic water quality tests, and ensuring all work complies with lab safety standards and ISO 17025 requirements.
Primary responsibilities include:
- Preparing, labelling, and distributing sample bottles for different inorganic chemical tests
- Conducting basic laboratory analyses, including DO (Dissolved Oxygen) and MBAS (Methylene Blue Active Substances)
- Collecting, scanning, and receiving sample bottles from the cooler room for testing
- Assisting with laboratory hygiene, including washing glassware and maintaining general cleanliness
- Disposing of hazardous chemicals according to SHE (Safety, Health, and Environment) protocols
- Managing gas bottles used in chemical analyses
- Adhering to SHERQ (Safety, Health, Environment, Risk and Quality) standards and good laboratory housekeeping
- Using LIMS (Laboratory Information Management System) to manage and track sample data
- Following sampling schedules, updating records, and preparing sample labels for traceability
Ideal Candidate
The ideal candidate will have a background in science with practical laboratory experience and a passion for environmental stewardship. You should be reliable, accurate, and capable of following routine procedures in a fast-paced setting.
To be considered, applicants must meet the following criteria:
- Educational Qualification:
- Minimum of NQF Level 4 (Grade 12) with Mathematics and Physical Science
- Experience:
- At least two (2) years of relevant experience in an analytical laboratory, preferably within the water, chemical, or environmental sectors
- Key Personal Attributes:
- Detail-oriented, results-driven, and comfortable working independently or as part of a team
- Ability to manage pressure and work efficiently with routine tasks
- Flexible with working hours, including willingness to work on weekends or public holidays
- Strong ethical standards and a safety-conscious mindset
Role Responsibility
As a Laboratory Assistant in the Inorganic Chemistry section, you will play a critical role in ensuring the successful delivery of water quality data for Rand Water’s operations. Your duties will directly impact the effectiveness of laboratory tests and the overall accuracy of the analytical data used for water treatment and distribution.
Responsibilities include:
- Maintaining sample integrity by ensuring proper collection, labelling, storage, and disposal
- Working under supervision to perform scheduled testing with consistency and accuracy
- Supporting laboratory analysts and chemists with sample preparation
- Communicating clearly with team members about sample statuses and test requirements
- Maintaining and cleaning lab spaces and ensuring glassware is ready for use
- Assisting with the maintenance and basic calibration of laboratory equipment
Skills and Attributes
Knowledge Requirements:
- Basic understanding of ISO/IEC 17025, the international standard for testing and calibration laboratories
- Familiarity with laboratory quality systems, SHERQ, and safe chemical handling procedures
- Working knowledge of water sampling techniques and the operation of different types of sampling devices
- Understanding of laboratory workflows and the importance of sample traceability
Skills Required:
- Basic computer literacy, particularly in Microsoft Office
- Ability to use LIMS (Labware or similar systems) for sample tracking and documentation
- Good written and verbal communication skills
- Competency in organising and prioritising tasks
- Ability to follow strict procedures and safety protocols
- Teamwork and interpersonal collaboration
