SPAR North Rand Distribution Centre is proud to announce the launch of its Freight Handling Learnership Programme for 2025/2026. This accredited programme is a gateway for 30 young, unemployed South Africans to gain valuable industry skills, workplace exposure, and a nationally recognised qualification in the logistics sector. Through a structured combination of theoretical learning and practical training, learners will develop essential capabilities in warehousing, distribution, and freight operations. The initiative is part of SPAR’s commitment to driving youth development, skills transformation, and economic empowerment in South Africa.
Job Description:
The Freight Handling Learnership offers learners the opportunity to work within one of South Africa’s leading retail distribution centres while completing a National Certificate: Freight Handling Level 3 (128 credits). Hosted at the SPAR North Rand Distribution Centre, the programme will run for a full calendar year and incorporates both academic instruction and hands-on training.
Key learning areas include
- Freight handling operations and best practices
- Receiving, sorting, storing, and dispatching of goods
- Inventory and stock control procedures
- Safety regulations and compliance in warehousing
- Handling material and stock using manual or mechanical equipment
- Basic communication and teamwork in a logistics setting
Participants will rotate through various departments to gain a holistic understanding of supply chain functions. This practical exposure not only builds technical skills but prepares learners for future employment in warehousing, logistics, or freight forwarding roles.
Ideal Candidate:
SPAR is looking for driven and committed individuals who are eager to enter the logistics and supply chain industry. The programme is designed for youth aged 18–34 who are currently unemployed and not enrolled in any other training, learnership, or education programme.
Eligibility requirements:
- Must have completed Grade 12 (Matric)
- Must be a South African citizen
- Must reside in or be willing to relocate to Gauteng (North Rand area)
- Must be unemployed and not studying full-time
- Passionate about the logistics and warehousing sector
- Willing to commit to a 12-month full-time programme
- Ability to work physically in a warehouse environment

Role Responsibility:
Learners enrolled in the programme will be expected to:
- Attend all classroom-based training sessions conducted by accredited facilitators
- Participate actively in day-to-day warehouse functions under supervision
- Apply theoretical knowledge to practical tasks and complete competency assessments
- Maintain performance standards and meet assessment deadlines
- Comply with all safety protocols, warehouse rules, and organisational procedures
- Support logistics teams in inventory management, order picking, dispatching, and receiving
- Work cohesively with team members to promote productivity and accuracy
- Complete daily learning logs, workplace assignments, and evaluation forms
By the end of the programme, learners will have acquired not only a recognised qualification but also real-world experience that can help them transition smoothly into formal employment within the logistics industry.
