Introduction
The Department of Basic Education (DBE) has launched Phase 5 of the Basic Education Employment Initiative (BEEI) as part of the Presidential Youth Employment Initiative (PYEI). This nationwide programme offers short-term employment opportunities to South African youth, empowering them to gain valuable work experience as Education Assistants (EAs) and General School Assistants (GAs) in public schools.
The programme is open to youth not currently employed, studying, or in training, and who live within 5 km of a school (or 30 km in rural/farm areas). All applications must be submitted through the official SA Youth platform (sayouth.mobi).
Job Description
Education Assistant (EA)
As an Education Assistant, you’ll be placed in classrooms where you’ll support teaching and learning activities. Responsibilities include:
- Assisting teachers with lesson preparation and classroom organisation
- Helping with learner assessments and homework
- Providing reading support and tutoring
- Assisting learners with special education needs
- Performing administrative and clerical tasks
- Promoting a positive learning environment
General School Assistant (GA)
As a General School Assistant, your role will focus on maintaining the school’s infrastructure and safety. Tasks may include:
- Maintaining school cleanliness and sanitation
- Assisting with gardening and minor maintenance
- Supporting COVID-19 safety and compliance
- Providing security and logistical support
- Assisting with IT and digital learning systems (for ICT-focused roles)
Ideal Candidate
To be eligible for these roles, applicants must meet the following minimum criteria:
- Be a South African citizen with a valid ID
- Aged 18–34 years (on or before 2 June 2025)
- Currently unemployed
- Not enrolled in education or training
- Not participating in any other internship or learnership
- Not receiving any social grant (excluding Child Support Grant)
- Reside within 5 km of the school (or 30 km in farm/rural communities)
- Have not participated in previous BEEI phases
Preference will be given to Historically Disadvantaged South Africans and youth with no prior exposure to the BEEI programme.
Role Responsibility
Education Assistant Responsibilities:
- Support educators during teaching and learning
- Organise and manage classroom materials
- Facilitate literacy support and reading initiatives
- Assist with school administrative duties
General Assistant Responsibilities:
- Maintain cleanliness and support sanitation
- Aid in the implementation of safety measures
- Provide support for security and COVID-19 compliance
- Help with gardening and basic maintenance
- Assist ICT teams (if in a digital-focused school)
