Job Description
UJ is currently seeking highly skilled and experienced professionals for the role of Protection Services Officer. This role is essential for ensuring the professional protection, safeguarding, and security of UJ’s assets, property, staff, students, and visitors.
Key Responsibilities
Security Services
- Patrol and monitor the university premises to prevent and detect signs of intrusion or non-compliance.
- Protect UJ’s property, staff, students, and visitors through physical patrolling and enforcement of access control policies.
- Ensure adherence to UJ security policies by students, staff, and visitors.
- Report defects in physical security infrastructure, including gates, street lights, and burglar proofing.
- Respond promptly to emergency incidents, securing crime scenes according to established protocols.
- Accurately complete administrative tasks related to security incidents.
- Provide detailed verbal and written reports of incidents.
- Operate and monitor security systems, ensuring the effective use of allocated equipment.
- Conduct preliminary investigations into reported offences.
- Provide escort duties for staff members during nighttime hours.
- Attend and respond to security-related incidents as directed by management.
- Conduct searches of individuals and vehicles in line with risk ratings and standard procedures.
- Secure and manage keys, maintain lost and found logs, and enforce the university’s standard operating procedures (SOPs).
Access Control
- Perform and enforce UJ’s access control protocols.
- Verify personnel access permits, student permits, visitor’s permits, vehicle permits, work orders, and asset control forms.
- Ensure the locking and securing of gates and doors after hours.
Customer Service
- Provide friendly, helpful, and professional protection services to staff, students, and visitors.
- Assist during public events, open days, and emergencies as directed by senior security personnel.
- Promote a culture of service excellence and positive engagement with the UJ community.
Health and Safety
- Act as a first responder in emergencies, including fires or medical incidents.
- Operate personal protective equipment (PPE) and security-related equipment following standard procedures.
- Report equipment faults promptly.
Professional Development
- Participate in ongoing training and professional development initiatives.
- Follow guidance from senior personnel and remain up to date with best practices in campus security.
Ideal Candidate

Minimum Requirements
- Grade 12 / Matric / NQF4 equivalent qualification.
- Valid Grade C registration with the Private Security Industry Regulatory Authority (PSIRA).
- Basic computer literacy, including knowledge of Microsoft Office packages.
- A valid driver’s license.
- Minimum of 2 years’ experience in security services.
- Clean record from the South African Police Service (SAPS).
- Physically and mentally fit for the role’s demands.
Recommendations
Preference may be given to candidates with:
- NQF5 or higher qualification.
- Experience with electronic access control and video management systems.
- Previous employment in an educational or corporate campus security environment.
- Professional drivers permit (PDP).
- Higher PSIRA grades or special accreditations, such as Grade A or B, Armed Reaction, or Special Events Security.
- Valid SAPS firearm competency certificate.
- Training in firefighting and first aid.
Role Responsibility

- Shift work, including weekends and public holidays, as per operational requirements (24/7/365).
- Travel between different UJ campuses may be required.
- Required to wear a uniform and work in all weather conditions.
- Carry a firearm as per operational needs and in line with legal requirements.
