Job Description
This apprenticeship focuses on preparing learners to become competent qualified boilermakers through a combination of classroom-based instruction and real-world practical training.
Learners will attend structured lessons at the Vredenburg Campus while gaining workplace exposure through Freeport Saldanha, one of the leading industrial players in the Western Cape. The end goal is to produce industry-ready artisans who can contribute meaningfully to South Africa’s engineering, construction, and manufacturing sectors.
Ideal Candidate
The programme seeks individuals who:
- Have a passion for hands-on mechanical and engineering work
- Are willing to commit to full-time training starting 1 August 2025
- Reside in the Western Cape or are willing to relocate for the duration of the programme
- Display a strong work ethic, reliability, and commitment to completing the full apprenticeship
Minimum Requirements
To be eligible, candidates must meet the following:
- Minimum Grade 9 qualification (higher qualifications welcome)
- Genuine interest in Boilermaking as a long-term career
- Must be unemployed and available for full-time study and training
- Ability to understand and follow safety instructions and mechanical processes

- Certified copy of South African ID
- Certified copy of proof of residence
- Certified copy of the highest qualification

Role Responsibility
As an apprentice, your responsibilities include but are not limited to:
- Attending all scheduled training sessions and assessments
- Participating in hands-on training in workshop environments
- Working under supervision during on-the-job training with industry mentors
- Learning how to read and interpret technical drawings
- Assisting in the fabrication, assembling, and installation of metal structures
- Applying safety standards and working with industrial tools and equipment
- Completing progress evaluations and assignments as directed by facilitators
Skills and Attributes
This apprenticeship programme demands physical energy, mental focus, and technical aptitude. Successful candidates should demonstrate the following:
Technical Skills:
- Good hand-eye coordination and manual dexterity
- Basic understanding of measurements, angles, and dimensions
- Ability to follow mechanical instructions and technical diagrams
- Awareness of welding tools, grinders, and cutting machines (advantageous but not mandatory)
Personal Attributes:
- Reliable, punctual, and willing to learn
