Job Description
The AfriSam 18.2 Boilermaker Learnership is a structured programme that includes theoretical classroom learning, on-site practical training, and mentorship. Learners will be required to sign a Learnership Agreement that will be registered with the Mining Qualifications Authority (MQA). Throughout the duration of the programme, learners will gain critical technical experience in plant maintenance, metal fabrication, welding processes, mechanical drawing interpretation, and safety compliance.

The programme will focus on:

  • Training learners in boilermaker operations in a mining and quarry environment
  • Conducting inspections, repairs, and maintenance on plant machinery and infrastructure
  • Developing proficiency in cutting, shaping, and assembling metal components
  • Implementing health and safety protocols as prescribed in the Mine Health and Safety Act
  • Exposure to quality assurance and technical drawing interpretation

Ideal Candidate
AfriSam is seeking individuals who demonstrate a strong interest in mechanical trades and are committed to building a career in the mining and aggregates sector. The ideal candidate should be a self-motivated, disciplined, and safety-conscious learner with a technical aptitude for engineering and fabrication work.

The ideal applicant should meet the following criteria:

  • Must be an unemployed South African youth
  • Have a technical qualification or be technically inclined
  • Be willing to commit to the full duration of the learnership
  • Must be able to work independently and take initiative
  • Demonstrate good communication and teamwork abilities
  • Possess a strong work ethic and be physically fit for manual labour

Role Responsibility
As part of the Boilermaker Learnership Programme, learners will take on multiple responsibilities under the guidance of qualified artisans and supervisors. These responsibilities are designed to provide learners with exposure to real working environments, safety practices, and practical boilermaking applications.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Participating in theoretical training sessions and practical workshops
  • Assisting in fabrication and repair of mining equipment and structures
  • Operating tools and machinery in a safe and efficient manner
  • Supporting the maintenance team with planned shutdown and emergency repairs
  • Reading and interpreting technical drawings and blueprints
  • Maintaining equipment logs and documentation for compliance
  • Engaging in toolbox talks and daily safety briefings

Minimum Requirements
To be considered for this opportunity, applicants must meet one of the following educational qualifications:

  • Grade 12 with Pure Mathematics, Physical Science, and English (all passed)
  • N2 Certificate with four relevant subjects, including Mathematics and Engineering Science
  • NCV Level 4 Engineering Certificate with seven related subjects
  • Technical Grade 11 with Maths, Science, Language, and trade theory
  • N6 Certificate or National Technical Diploma (T, S, or N stream)

Additional requirements include:

  • Valid South African ID
  • A valid driver’s licence is an advantage but not mandatory
  • Residing in Gauteng or willing to relocate to Jukskei/Eikenhof Quarry
  • Must not currently be employed or enrolled in any learnership or internship
  • Must meet the requirements for 18.2 MQA registration (non-employed learner)
