Rand Water, one of Africa’s largest bulk water utilities, is seeking two Laboratory Assistants to join its Scientific Services Division in Vereeniging, Gauteng. The successful candidates will play a vital role in supporting the Inorganic Chemistry Section by performing sample preparations and basic laboratory analyses that contribute to water quality assurance.

Job Description

The core responsibility of the Laboratory Assistant is to prepare water samples and conduct basic laboratory analyses in the Inorganic Chemistry Laboratory. This includes sample tracking, preparation, documentation, and safe disposal, as well as maintaining laboratory hygiene and complying with ISO 17025 quality standards.

You will report to a senior laboratory technician and support analytical testing in a controlled scientific environment that plays a key role in ensuring safe and clean water supply.

Ideal Candidate

This position is suited to individuals with:

  • A minimum qualification of NQF Level 4, with Mathematics and Science as core subjects
  • At least two years of experience in a scientific or analytical laboratory
  • A strong sense of routine, attention to detail, and the ability to work in a high-precision, compliance-driven environment

A passion for science, public health, and environmental sustainability will be advantageous, along with the willingness to work beyond normal hours when required.

Role Responsibility

Laboratory Assistants will support daily laboratory operations by performing the following:

  • Print sample labels and sampling schedules using the Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS)
  • Collect, filter, distribute, and dispose of water samples according to laboratory protocols
  • Scan and receive sample bottles from cooler rooms and distribute them to the appropriate workstations
  • Prepare sampling bottles for chemical tests on various inorganic parameters
  • Conduct basic chemical tests such as Dissolved Oxygen (DO) and Methylene Blue Active Substances (MBAS)
  • Clean and sterilize laboratory glassware and assist in general lab cleanliness
  • Handle gas cylinders used in analytical testing and assist in the safe disposal of hazardous chemicals
  • Adhere to SHEQ (Safety, Health, Environment, and Quality) procedures and ensure strict compliance with housekeeping policies

Skills and Attributes

To successfully perform the duties of a Laboratory Assistant, candidates must have the following competencies:

Knowledge

  • Basic understanding of ISO 17025 laboratory standards
  • Familiarity with water sampling devices and analytical procedures
  • General knowledge of laboratory safety, quality control, and chemical handling
  • Experience with laboratory routines, including glassware cleaning and chemical preparation

Skills

  • Basic computer literacy, especially with lab software such as LIMS
  • Good written and verbal communication skills
  • Excellent planning and organisational abilities
  • Ability to follow protocols and work independently with minimal supervision
  • Proficiency in sample tracking and data capturing

Attitude

  • Strong attention to detail and adherence to quality standards
  • Willingness to work overtime, weekends, or public holidays when needed
  • A team player who can also perform tasks independently
  • Physically capable of performing duties such as handling sample containers and moving gas cylinders
  • A professional, safety-first mindset, especially when handling hazardous substances
