Job Description

As part of this internship, selected candidates will join the City’s Energy and Electricity Department and assist with the implementation and monitoring of energy efficiency initiatives and electrical engineering support tasks. Interns will receive hands-on exposure to technical operations, community engagement, and municipal energy projects, while working alongside experienced professionals.

The internship runs until 30 June 2026 and aims to build practical skills and workplace readiness in line with South Africa’s broader development goals.

This internship targets unemployed graduates and early-career professionals in the electrical engineering field who are passionate about energy efficiency and municipal service delivery.

Minimum Requirements:

  • Post-Matric Qualification in Electrical Engineering (Power/Heavy Current)
  • Proficient in computer use and basic technical software
  • South African citizen and resident of the City of Ekurhuleni
  • Aged 18–35 years, though individuals over 35 may also be considered
  • A valid driver’s licence is advantageous but not mandatory
  • Ability to read, write, and communicate effectively in English
  • Confident in engaging with communities and attending public engagements

Role Responsibility

Interns will support various functions within the electrical engineering division, especially those linked to Energy Efficiency Demand Side Management (EEDSM) and other service delivery mandates.

Core Responsibilities:

  • Assist in inspection and auditing of electrical projects
  • Monitor and support EEDSM project implementation and performance
  • Process and approve Embedded Generation (EG) applications
  • Collect building and operational data for Energy Performance Certificate (EPC) purposes
  • Provide general support at assigned municipal electrical workshops
  • Assist with supply chain management procedures and documentation
  • Support daily administration and project coordination tasks
  • Help ensure timely achievement of service delivery goals
  • Attend relevant internal meetings, training sessions, and workshops

This role provides excellent real-world exposure to project planning, technical inspections, and regulatory processes related to municipal energy services.
