Job Description
The Retail Assistant is responsible for executing point-of-sale (POS) activities, engaging customers, maintaining store standards, and contributing to the overall success of the store’s day-to-day operations. This role includes customer service, cash handling, promotion execution, and stock management.
Job Objectives:
- Execute all operational activities at the POS in a timely and efficient manner
- Scan products accurately and collect payment, applying discounts or ClubCard rewards where applicable
- Handle cash and card payments safely and responsibly
- Proactively promote and enroll customers in the Clicks ClubCard programme
- Inform customers about current promotions and in-store specials
- Provide excellent customer service by being visible, approachable, and professional
- Support merchandising and ensure products are neatly displayed and well-stocked
- Adhere to company visual merchandising and store housekeeping standards
- Stay updated on product knowledge, new arrivals, promotions, and events
Minimum Requirements
Education:
- Essential: Grade 12
- Desirable: Minimum of 50% in Mathematics and English at Grade 12 level
Experience:
- Desirable: Previous experience in a customer-facing role in retail or FMCG store operations
Knowledge Areas:
- Basic mathematics and numeracy
- Understanding of retail promotions and merchandising
- Awareness of stock handling and management processes
- Commitment to customer service excellence
Role Responsibility
As a frontline team member, the Retail Assistant ensures customers have a smooth and enjoyable shopping experience. Your role includes welcoming shoppers, offering guidance, processing transactions, and maintaining visual appeal on the shop floor. You’ll also support broader operational goals such as inventory accuracy and promotional execution.
Key Daily Responsibilities:
- Greet customers warmly and offer assistance
- Capture transactions accurately at the till point
- Balance the cash drawer at the start and end of shift
- Educate customers about ClubCard benefits and register new members
- Maintain displays and refill shelves as needed
- Execute promotional plans and maintain signage
- Keep the store environment tidy and safe for shoppers
- Respond to queries and escalate unresolved customer concerns
Skills and Attributes
Technical Skills:
- Good verbal communication
- Basic computer and till operation skills
- Numeracy and calculation ability
- Familiarity with customer loyalty programmes (advantageous)
