Introduction
The Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR), a premier research and development organisation in South Africa, is inviting recent graduates to apply for its Graduate in Training (GIT) Programme 2025. Job Description:
The Graduate in Training (GIT) Programme is part of the CSIR’s Aerospace Systems Impact Area within the Defence and Security Cluster. It is designed to equip young graduates with technical, operational, and project-related competencies through hands-on training, exposure to research innovation, and professional development opportunities.

There are two exciting roles available under this programme:

1. Graduate in Training: Electronic Engineer
Key Responsibilities:

  • Assist in system upgrades, fault diagnostics, and installations
  • Support wind tunnel plant energy management operations
  • Program and maintain PLC systems (Siemens, Allen Bradley)
  • Design and implement Power Factor Correction (PFC) systems and printed circuit boards (PCBs)
  • Provide technical documentation and administrative project support
  • Contribute to instrumentation and data acquisition systems

Qualifications and Required Skills:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical or Electronic Engineering
  • Familiarity with CAD software (AutoCAD, SolidWorks)
  • Knowledge of industrial automation, PLCs, and control systems
  • Excellent analytical, problem-solving, and technical communication skills
  • Must be a South African citizen and eligible for security clearance

2. Graduate in Training: Mechatronic Engineer
Key Responsibilities:

  • Assist in upgrading and maintaining electromechanical systems
  • Diagnose issues related to motors, controllers, and wiring
  • Support the development of PCB layouts and integration of automation systems
  • Program PLCs and design PFC systems
  • Collaborate on interdisciplinary engineering projects
  • Maintain engineering documentation and provide technical support

Qualifications and Required Skills:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechatronic Engineering
  • Competency in AutoCAD, SolidWorks, and system design
  • Understanding of electrical and mechanical systems, including PLC and VFD/VSD
  • Strong collaborative, initiative-driven, and critical thinking mindset
  • Must be a South African citizen and eligible for security clearance

Role Responsibility:

  • Upgrading and managing electrical and electromechanical systems
  • Conducting fault finding, repair, and maintenance
  • Supporting project managers and senior engineers in R&D initiatives
  • Developing and testing control systems and automation solutions
  • Assisting with technical documentation and presenting findings to teams
  • Participating in innovation sessions and knowledge-sharing workshops
