Introduction
Eskom, South Africa’s leading electricity public utility, is seeking hardworking and physically capable individuals to fill five (5) Utilityman positions (Site Z04) in its Substation Department under the Construction Services Business Unit. These positions are available on a BCCEI Limited Duration Contract basis and are ideally suited for individuals with a background in semi-skilled labour and a willingness to work in physically demanding environments.

The Utilityman role forms part of Eskom’s commitment to safe and reliable energy delivery and plays a critical support role in the construction and maintenance of substations and electrical infrastructure.

Job Description
The Utilityman will be responsible for executing various manual, semi-skilled tasks that involve physical labour, tool handling, equipment support, and site cleanliness. The position requires working under supervision in a high-risk environment and adhering strictly to safety protocols.

Core job duties include:

  • Handling materials and tools essential for substation operations
  • Performing lifting, pushing, carrying, and other labour-intensive activities
  • Supporting technical teams with manual preparation and clean-up duties
  • Maintaining site safety and cleanliness at all times
  • Adhering to all SHEQ (Safety, Health, Environment, and Quality) regulations
  • Participating in the execution of cabling construction and support work
  • Working at heights and within confined spaces when required

Ideal Candidate
The ideal candidate is physically fit, has experience with technical tools, and thrives in a hands-on work environment. A willingness to work under varying weather conditions and outside regular hours is important.

Minimum Requirements:

  • Grade 12 (Matric)
  • 1–2 years of experience in a technical, construction, or utility-related field
  • Proven capability in manual labour, ideally within an industrial or infrastructure environment

Knowledge and Technical Abilities:

  • Familiarity with basic construction and cabling practices
  • Awareness of workplace safety regulations including OHSA (Occupational Health and Safety Act)
  • Understanding of tools and power equipment usage
  • Capable of compiling a Hazard Identification and Risk Assessment (HIRA)

Key Responsibilities

  • Maintain a clean and safe work environment on-site
  • Assist technical staff in the setup and maintenance of equipment and tools
  • Ensure all tools and materials are returned to their proper place after use
  • Participate actively in team safety initiatives
  • Report hazards or unsafe conditions immediately to supervisors
  • Support environmental and quality standards compliance as part of daily tasks
