Job Description
Each learnership offers a comprehensive 12 to 24-month training programme, combining theory with workplace exposure:
Diesel Mechanic Learnership
- Learn maintenance and servicing of heavy mining diesel equipment
- Attend scheduled theoretical classes and short courses
- Engage in practical tasks at the mine’s mechanical workshop
- Participate in ongoing assessments and development feedback
Rigger/Ropesman Learnership
- Gain skills in lifting, securing, and moving heavy equipment safely
- Understand rigging principles, safety protocols, and load management
- Complete MQA-accredited training modules and job simulations
- Receive direct mentorship from experienced riggers on-site
Electrical Learnership
- Study high-voltage systems and electrical safety practices
- Conduct installations, inspections, and fault-finding in mining environments
- Perform hands-on tasks with guidance from qualified electricians
- Develop into a trade-certified Electrician through intensive exposure
All learners are required to:
- Comply with health, safety, and environmental standards
- Wear Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) at all times

Ideal Candidate

Role Responsibility
Learners will be expected to:
- Complete all assigned MQA-aligned training modules
- Attend theory classes and technical workshops regularly
- Participate in short courses and health and safety inductions
- Maintain high standards of discipline and performance
- Engage in feedback sessions with mentors and supervisors
- Demonstrate a proactive approach to their learning and development
- Record and report daily learning outcomes and workshop attendance
- Assist qualified tradespeople with real maintenance and engineering tasks
- Observe ethical behavior, timekeeping, and adherence to mine rules
Skills and Attributes

- Strong foundational knowledge in Mathematics and Science

Minimum Qualifications
To qualify for the respective learnerships, applicants must meet the following requirements:
All Learnerships (General Requirements):
- Be a permanent resident of one of the following South Deep host communities:
Bekkersdaal, Zuurberkom, Thusanang, Hillshaven, Westonaria, Poortjie, Simunye, Kalbasfontein, Jachtfontein - Be medically fit for both the training environment and physical requirements (certified by Gold Fields Occupational Health Centre)
- Successfully complete a Heat Tolerance Screening Test and other assessments
- Submit proof of residence and required certified documentation
Diesel Mechanic Learnership:
- Grade 12 with Mathematics and Physical Science
- Full N3 qualification with the following 4 subjects:
- Engineering Mathematics
- Engineering Science
- Diesel Trade Theory
- Engineering Drawing
Rigger/Ropesman Learnership:
- Grade 12 with Mathematics and Physical Science
- Full N2 qualification with the following 4 subjects:
- Engineering Mathematics
- Engineering Science
- N2 Rigging Trade Theory
- Engineering Drawing
Electrician Learnership:
- Grade 12 with Mathematics and Physical Science
- Full N3 qualification with the following 4 subjects:
- Engineering Mathematics
- Engineering Science
- Electrical Trade Theory
- Industrial Electronics
