Job Description
Security Officers at SMU will be responsible for ensuring the protection of university assets and enforcing security protocols in line with institutional policies. The duties span across surveillance, access control, incident response, and general safety enforcement.
Core responsibilities include:
- Conducting regular patrols of university buildings, perimeters, and open areas
- Monitoring and operating CCTV surveillance and alarm systems to detect unusual activity
- Responding promptly to alarms, emergencies, or reports of suspicious behavior
- Enforcing institutional rules, including access restrictions, curfew enforcement, and anti-vandalism policies
- Controlling entry points to prevent unauthorized access to secure facilities
- Writing daily security logs and compiling incident reports for recordkeeping
- Supporting evacuation procedures and providing emergency assistance, including first aid if necessary
- Guiding visitors and students by providing directions or general assistance on campus
- Liaising with local emergency services as required during incidents
- Reporting infrastructure risks, hazards, or equipment malfunctions to the relevant maintenance teams
Security Officers must maintain a high level of visibility across campus and act with integrity, discretion, and accountability in all interactions.

The ideal candidate for this position is a PSIRA-registered security professional with strong situational awareness, excellent communication skills, and a dedication to campus safety. Candidates should be physically fit, able to work rotational shifts, and have a clear understanding of how to handle real-time emergencies with calmness and competence.

Role Responsibility
Security Officers at SMU will be expected to:
- Maintain an active security presence across the campus through patrols and surveillance
- Monitor and operate digital security systems and report irregularities immediately
- Enforce access control procedures, including screening of visitors and ensuring ID compliance
- Respond to medical emergencies, fires, or other crises following prescribed protocols
- Collaborate with the Human Resources and Facilities Departments to improve safety strategies
- Remain alert and courteous while de-escalating potentially confrontational situations
- Perform random inspections and provide verbal warnings or escalate as needed
- Escort visitors, contractors, or university vehicles in high-security areas
- Maintain accurate records of shift reports, incidents, and routine safety checks
- Foster a secure and welcoming environment for students, academics, and guests
Skills and Attributes
Successful applicants should bring the following core skills and competencies:
- A valid PSIRA Grade C certificate (or higher), registered and in good standing
- A Matric / Grade 12 certificate
- Solid understanding of safety regulations and emergency procedures
- Professional demeanor with good verbal communication skills
- Physically fit and capable of standing or walking for long periods
- Experience in operating surveillance equipment, access control systems, and two-way radios
- Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to deal with diverse populations
- Accuracy and attention to detail in recordkeeping and report writing
- Ability to follow instructions and remain calm under pressure
- Willingness to work rotational shifts, including weekends and public holidays
Additional advantageous qualifications:
- Exposure to tertiary academic environments
- Experience with CCTV system management and alarm monitoring
- Computer literacy for basic digital logging and communication tasks
- Valid driver’s license (optional but beneficial)
Minimum Requirements
Applicants must meet the following baseline criteria:
- South African citizen with no criminal record
- Minimum of three (3) years of security industry experience
- Valid PSIRA registration (Grade C or above)
- Basic first aid training is preferred
- Willingness to comply with all university security protocols
- Availability for full-time, shift-based work
