Introduction

The City of Johannesburg, through the Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department (JMPD), is officially inviting applications for its 2025 Metro Police Officer Trainee Programme. This prestigious 18-month learnership opportunity is targeted at unemployed youth and community members residing within Johannesburg who are passionate about public service and law enforcement.

As part of the City’s commitment to promoting safety and order, this Metro Police training intake aims to equip selected candidates with the technical, ethical, and physical capabilities needed to become professional peace officers within the JMPD.

Job Description

This is a full-time 18-month structured Metro Police Officer Training Programme. Successful applicants will receive theoretical, practical, and physical training at the JMPD Training Academy. The curriculum includes academic modules, fitness assessments, firearms competency, law enforcement procedures, bylaw enforcement, and community safety education.

Upon successful completion, candidates may be considered for permanent appointment as Qualified Metro Police Officers and deployed across various units and regions within the City of Johannesburg.

Role Responsibility

During the programme, trainees will:

  • Attend and pass all JMPD Academy modules (theoretical and practical)
  • Participate in community outreach and safety initiatives
  • Learn how to enforce municipal bylaws and road traffic regulations
  • Undergo weapons and physical fitness training
  • Adhere to Academy rules and national policing standards
  • Be exposed to real-life operational policing scenarios
  • Work under supervision during field training placements

Minimum Requirements

To qualify for the Metro Police Trainee Programme, candidates must meet all the following requirements:

  • Be a South African citizen
  • Aged 18 to 35 years
  • Possess a valid Grade 12 / Senior Certificate / NQF Level 4 qualification
  • Must reside in the Johannesburg Metropolitan Area (proof of residence required)
  • No criminal record or pending cases (background and biometric checks will apply)
  • Valid Code B driver’s license (no learner’s licenses)
  • Physically and mentally fit – must submit a comprehensive medical certificate
  • Successfully complete a pre-training fitness assessment
  • No civil judgments for fraud or corruption
  • Proficient in English (reading, writing, and speaking)
  • Willing and able to carry a firearm
  • Must wear a police uniform and adhere to grooming and discipline standards
  • Must undergo and pass all JMPD, RTMC, and municipal vetting procedures
