This position is based in Empangeni and reports to the Distribution Manager. Job Description
As a Code 10 Driver Salesman, your primary function will be to deliver baked goods and confectionery to clients within the retail and informal trade space. You will also actively sell products to existing and new customers, ensuring excellent customer service, inventory accuracy, and on-time deliveries.
The successful candidate will be responsible for both the physical delivery of goods and relationship management with clients, while maintaining the required administrative records. From ensuring stock accuracy to managing transactions and adhering to road safety protocols, the role is both operational and customer-facing.
Key Responsibilities Include:
- Transporting bread and confectionery products to customers in a timely and safe manner
- Ensuring the vehicle and driver presentation meet company and regulatory standards
- Completing daily safety checklists and reporting faults or damages immediately
- Managing and reconciling deliveries with invoices and cash received
- Monitoring and improving route performance by upselling and acquiring new customers
- Supervising and coaching van assistants and ensuring team collaboration
- Participating in crate recovery, inventory tracking, and accurate reporting
- Assisting in vehicle loading and unloading
- Following company procedures during emergencies, thefts, or road incidents
- Representing RCL Foods with professionalism and adherence to service-level agreements
Ideal Candidate
The ideal candidate is a results-oriented individual with hands-on experience in FMCG product deliveries, particularly within the baking or food distribution sector. The person should demonstrate the ability to work independently while contributing to the team’s goals. Sales acumen, strong interpersonal skills, and reliability are key characteristics for success in this role.
Minimum Requirements
- Grade 12 / Matric
- Valid Code 10 Driver’s License and PDP (Professional Driving Permit)
- At least 2 years of experience driving within the FMCG sector
- Previous experience delivering and selling products for cash
- Strong numeracy and literacy skills
- Proficiency in English (both written and verbal)
- Willingness to work weekends, public holidays, and overtime
- Ability to assist in the absence of other drivers (standby duty)
- Understanding of safe working procedures and Occupational Health and Safety standards
Role Responsibility
Vehicle & Dress Duties:
- Maintain vehicle hygiene and cleanliness
- Conduct daily inspections based on a company checklist
- Adhere to PPE standards and uniform policies
- Report mechanical faults or accidents immediately
Stock Handling & Loading:
- Verify orders and load accuracy
- Inspect the quality of stock prior to loading
- Sign off on loading sheets and stock quantity
- Assist with physical loading and unloading as required
Van Assistant Management:
- Supervise and support van assistant duties
- Provide guidance and report performance issues
- Ensure team etiquette, grooming, and discipline
Customer Service & Sales:
- Build and retain customer relationships
- Seek sales growth opportunities and new clients
- Implement promotions and provide market intelligence
- Handle customer complaints or queries professionally
Delivery Execution:
- Ensure all deliveries align with customer orders
- Take action if stock shortages or over-deliveries occur
- Secure orders for the next day and notify the sales department
- Collect finished products from alternate sources when necessary
Transactional Accuracy:
- Handle cash securely and deposit it in vehicle safe immediately
- Avoid counterfeit notes and theft risk
- Complete all documentation including invoices, delivery notes, fuel slips
- Match delivery quantities with payments and paperwork
- Conduct daily cash-ups with the supervisor
Competitor & Market Analysis:
- Collect and report on competitor activity and pricing
- Share customer insights and feedback with management
General:
- Take on other duties as needed, including assisting in loading or acting as a van assistant
- Comply with all safety regulations
