Job Description
As a Pharmacist Intern, your primary responsibility will be to support the in-hospital pharmaceutical team to ensure timely and accurate delivery of pharmaceutical services to both patients and the public. Your scope of work will cover both operational and clinical aspects of pharmacy practice.
Your key responsibilities will include:
- Assisting in the accurate dispensing of medication to patients
- Supporting stock control and inventory management of medicines and scheduled substances
- Ensuring compliance with relevant legislation, including the Medicines and Related Substances Act
- Participating in antimicrobial stewardship activities and clinical pharmacy initiatives
- Engaging with medical aid schemes to ensure alignment with benefits and formularies
- Assisting with general administration and pharmacy system tasks, particularly using UNISOLVE or AS400
- Upholding ethical standards and maintaining detailed records as per Good Pharmacy Practice (GPP) guidelines
- Providing in-store support and patient education where necessary
Ideal Candidate
The ideal candidate for this internship is a newly qualified pharmacist who holds a B Pharm degree and has a genuine passion for healthcare delivery, hospital pharmacy, and pharmaceutical excellence.
Eligibility requirements include:
- A B Pharm degree (essential)
- Registration with the South African Pharmacy Council (SAPC) (or proof of eligibility to register as an intern)
- No prior professional experience required (entry-level opportunity)
- Ability to work effectively as part of a team in a hospital-based pharmacy environment
Role Responsibility
You will be expected to provide support to the lead pharmacist and hospital staff to:
- Dispense medication accurately and in accordance with prescriptions
- Communicate professionally with doctors, nurses, and patients regarding pharmaceutical queries
- Monitor and maintain stock levels, ensuring critical medicines are available at all times
- Uphold legal compliance with pharmaceutical regulations and ensure safe storage of scheduled medicines
- Record and document all dispensing activities as required by law and internal policy
- Assist with pharmacy-related quality assurance and audit processes
