Job Description
The Continuous Improvement Intern will be part of a dynamic team committed to optimizing manufacturing processes. The role focuses on the analysis and improvement of production efficiency, resource usage, and material utilization. This is a full-time internship suitable for graduates or final-year students in Industrial Engineering, Chemical Engineering, or related fields.
The intern will be trained and guided to use analytical tools, including PowerBI and Excel, to generate actionable insights. Responsibilities will involve working with production teams, evaluating time-motion efficiency, performing material variance analysis, and supporting continuous improvement projects aligned with Lean and Six Sigma principles.
This internship is a hands-on opportunity to learn from industry professionals while contributing to real-world improvements within one of South Africa’s most respected food production operations.
Ideal Candidate
The ideal candidate for the Continuous Improvement Internship will be:
- A recent graduate or final-year student pursuing a qualification in Industrial Engineering, Operations Management, or Chemical Engineering.
- Analytical and data-savvy with strong Excel or PowerBI skills (PowerBI preferred).
- Passionate about continuous improvement methodologies such as Lean Manufacturing and DMAIC (Define, Measure, Analyze, Improve, Control).
- Equipped with excellent communication and presentation abilities.
- Enthusiastic about process analysis, waste reduction, and improving operational workflows.
- A team player with the motivation to learn, adapt, and deliver meaningful value to the business.
Role Responsibilities
As a Continuous Improvement Intern, your day-to-day duties will include:
- Creating Production Efficiency Reports:
- Use PowerBI or Excel to generate insightful comparisons between resource usage and production outputs.
- Identify patterns and trends to support cost-saving initiatives and improve plant efficiency.
- Material Usage Variance Analysis:
- Investigate raw material consumption versus planned usage.
- Pinpoint inefficiencies and suggest corrective measures to reduce waste and loss.
- Conducting Time & Motion Studies:
- Observe production lines to evaluate workflow and labor efficiency.
- Provide detailed time-based insights to refine operational productivity.
- Supporting Lean Projects:
- Apply Lean thinking to enhance plant layout, eliminate process waste, and streamline operations.
- Participate in root cause analysis and support the team in implementing countermeasures.
- DMAIC Methodology Application:
- Work with mentors to apply the DMAIC process on selected production challenges.
- Develop practical solutions that are measurable and sustainable over time.
- Collaboration and Communication:
- Engage with production teams, supervisors, and analysts to understand on-the-ground challenges.
- Present findings and solutions clearly in meetings and reporting documents.
Skills and Attributes
To succeed in this role, candidates must demonstrate the following:
- Technical Proficiency: Advanced Excel skills and familiarity with PowerBI or a willingness to learn quickly.
