Introduction
Mintek, South Africa’s national mineral research organisation, is offering a valuable Work Integrated Learning Programme (P1/P2) through its Biometallurgy Division. This internship opportunity is targeted at students who need workplace exposure to fulfill the practical requirements of their National Diploma or Degree. Candidates selected for this one-year contract will gain technical and professional experience in one of the country’s most respected scientific and metallurgical institutions.
Job Description
The Mintek Work Integrated Learning Programme offers students hands-on experience in laboratory procedures, data collection, research support, and metallurgical processes under the guidance of experienced scientists and engineers. Participants will be exposed to applied research projects and experimental work that enhances their theoretical knowledge and builds industry-ready skills.
The programme provides a unique opportunity to work within Mintek’s Biometallurgy Division, contributing to projects related to chemical extraction, bioleaching, and innovative processing of mineral resources.
Ideal Candidate
Mintek is looking for self-motivated, detail-oriented students who are passionate about metallurgy and chemical processes. Ideal candidates must:
- Have an excellent academic record (minimum average of 60%)
- Have completed S4 or S5 in one of the following disciplines:
- Chemical Engineering
- Metallurgical Engineering
- Analytical Chemistry
- Be computer literate (MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint)
- Have strong numerical and analytical thinking skills
- Communicate clearly and professionally
- Demonstrate initiative, responsibility, and a willingness to learn
- Be available for the full 12-month duration
Role Responsibility
During the internship, successful candidates will be responsible for:
- Supporting laboratory-scale experimental work
- Assisting researchers with biohydrometallurgical testing
- Monitoring and recording process data accurately
- Conducting sample preparation and analysis
- Participating in safety and quality control processes
- Completing project documentation and reporting
- Assisting with technical evaluations and trial runs
- Collaborating with multi-disciplinary teams
Interns will be integrated into ongoing research and development initiatives aimed at advancing sustainable mineral processing techniques.

Position Summary
This is a 12-month fixed-term internship based in Randburg. Interns will receive a stipend of R93,600.00 per annum, which is not negotiable. Selected candidates must arrange their own accommodation and travel to and from Mintek facilities. Psychometric testing may form part of the selection process.
