eThekwini Municipality Internship Programme 2026

The eThekwini Municipality in Durban has opened applications for its Internship Programme 2026/2027, one of the largest municipal graduate development initiatives in South Africa. Unemployed graduates and TVET N6 students can earn a monthly stipend of between R2,795.03 and R8,494.87 while gaining 18 to 24 months of structured workplace experience across dozens of fields, from finance and engineering to law and IT. Applications close on 17 July 2026, so you need to move fast.

About the Programme

eThekwini Municipality is the metropolitan government responsible for Durban and surrounding areas, serving millions of residents and employing tens of thousands of people across engineering, finance, health, environmental and administrative services. It is one of the biggest employers in KwaZulu-Natal.

The Internship Programme 2026/2027 was designed to tackle a familiar problem: graduates who cannot find work because they lack experience, and cannot gain experience because they cannot find work. The municipality offers structured workplace learning aligned to your qualification. TVET graduates who have completed N6 requirements are placed for 18 months of Work Integrated Learning, which allows them to qualify for their National Diploma. University graduates are placed for up to 24 months. Interns work alongside experienced municipal professionals and build the practical skills that public and private employers look for.

Who Can Apply

  • South African citizens
  • Unemployed graduates with a recognised qualification, or TVET students with an N6 certificate needing Work Integrated Learning for a National Diploma
  • Applicants who need workplace experience and meet the qualification requirements for their chosen field
  • Fields include finance, accounting, economics, public administration, environmental science, agriculture, health sciences, nursing, engineering (civil, electrical, mechanical, chemical, industrial), town planning, quantity surveying, IT, web development, data analysis, marketing, HR, logistics, law, LLB, criminology, graphic design and many more
  • You cannot apply if you have already completed an internship programme of 12 months or longer
  • Persons with disabilities are encouraged to apply
