The Free State Department of Human Settlements Graduate Internship Programme is now open for 2026, offering 37 internship posts to unemployed graduates who want real workplace experience in government. Interns are placed on a 24-month contract and earn a monthly stipend of R8 174.75 while gaining skills across a wide range of fields. This is a paid, structured internship aimed at young South Africans who have completed a relevant qualification and have never done a public-service internship before. Applications close on 31 July 2026 at 16:00, so prepare your documents early.
About the Programme
The Department of Human Settlements is the government department responsible for planning and delivering housing and sustainable human settlements, one of the most important services the state provides to ordinary South Africans. The Free State provincial department runs this internship as part of the national Public Service Internship Programme, which is designed to give recent graduates the practical experience they need to become employable.
Many graduates in South Africa struggle to find their first job because employers ask for experience they have never had the chance to gain. A government internship breaks that cycle. Over 24 months, interns work alongside experienced officials, learn how the public service operates and build a track record that makes them far stronger candidates for permanent roles. For a young graduate, it is a paid bridge between the lecture hall and a real career.
